What is a Eastern Mud Turtle?

Eastern Mud Turtles (Kinosternon subrubrum) are a small freshwater turtle, very similar to the common Musk Turtle. Only growing to up to four to six inches in size (shell front to back) they can be kept happily in a 100 litre aquarium. Like Terrapins, Eastern Mud Turtles will require a basking area so that they may rest and dry off. When buying Eastern Mud Turtles from hatchlings it is quite easy with regular handling to make them tame and friendly.

How do I keep a Eastern Mud Turtle?

An ideal set of to keep Eastern Mud Turtles would be a glass aquarium with a filter (to keep water clean), a heater (to keep water at a constant 25 degrees), and UV light (to encourage correct shell growth). They also need a landed area where they can get out of the water such as a Turtle Dock that has a basking light above it, For the Eastern Mud Turtles their water levels must be no deeper than approximately 1.5-2x their total shell length as they are not the strongest of swimmers. It is important to remember that it takes three to four years for a hatchling Eastern Mud Turtle to grow to full size and therefore, to help socialise the Turtles, it much better to keep the hatchlings in smaller enclosure (30-40 litres) to start with; upgrading to a larger home as they grow.

What do I feed my Eastern Mud Turtle?

Eastern Mud Turtles are omnivores and in the wild would eat vegetation and such things as fish and insects. For your pet Turtle however, there are various complete dried and frozen foods that contain all of the animals dietary requirements.

How big and what sex will my Eastern Mud Turtle be?

The baby Eastern Mud Turtles we sell are approximately one inch long (Shell length front to back). Due to their small size and juvenile status we are unable to sex these turtles.
