What is a River Cooter Terrapin?

River Cooters (Pseudemys concinna concinna) are a medium to large freshwater Terrapin that grows to approximately seven to eight inches in size (shell front to back). Unlike Musks, Terrapins are a basking species and spend and equal amount of their time in water and on land. When buying Terrapins from hatchlings it is quite easy with regular handling to make them tame and friendly.

How do I keep a Terrapin?

An ideal set of to keep Terrapins would be glass aquarium with a filter (to keep water clean), a heater (to keep water at a constant 25 degrees), and UV light (to encourage correct shell growth). They also need a landed area where the can get out of the water such as Turtle Dock. It is important to remember that it takes three to four years for a hatchling Terrapin to grow to full size and therefore, to help socialize the Terrapin, it much better to keep the hatchling in smaller enclosure (30-40 litres) to start with; upgrading to a larger home as they grow.

What do I feed my Terrapin?

Terrapins are omnivores and in the wild would eat vegetation and such things as fish and insects. For your pet Terrapin however, they are various complete dried and frozen foods that contain all of the animals dietary requirements.

How big and what sex will my Baby Terrapin be?

The baby Terrapins we sell are approximately one to two inches long (Shell length front to back). Due to their small size and juvenile status we are unable to sex Terrapins.
