This is another very popular species, unsexed, and suitable for the beginner. These Tortoise need to be kept indoors, but can be kept outside in the warmest part of the summer.

Background
The Horsfield tortoise comes from Eastern Europe. They can live for up to 100 years in captivity. Horsfields can grow up to 22cm when mature, and weigh up to 2kg. They will hibernate during the winter, but you do not allow this when they are young and this is achevied by controlling the heat and light they receive.
Diet
The tortoise diet should consist largely of dark leafy green. Garden weeds are perfect, but supermarket greens are also fine. Suitable weeds include sow thistles, dandelion (both leaves and flowers), milk thistle, plantain, chickweed, dock and bindweed. Weeds can also be homegrown using bought in seed kits.
Food supplementation is very important, particulary if using supermarket green. A balanced supplement such as vitamin / mineral compound is ideal.
